February 14th, 2011 kicked off a week of massive protests in Madison Wisconsin. Tens of thousands of Wisconsin residents, including various Union members, teachers, and UW students and faculty, rallied at the state capitol to protest newly elected Gov. Scott Walker's draconian legislation supposedly intended to balance the state's fiscal budget. The protesters were upset over Gov. Walker's ‘budget repair bill’, which many felt was largely a pretext for stripping nearly all collective bargaining rights from public and state employees.

"When Scott Walker campaigned in Wisconsin, he said he was a centrist, who wanted a balanced budget, who would do modest and effective things—and how that was interpreted was that he wouldn't change very much (trust me, changing whether state public employee unions are allowed to collectively bargain with the state is a huge change, especially as we've had these provisions in place for well over fifty years).

"Yet Walker's view of 'modest' is exactly what he put up—a bill that would strip all public employee unions of their right to collectively bargain; a bill that would force unions to re-certify every year; a bill that has caused massive unrest throughout the entire state of Wisconsin, massive protests (over 35,000 Friday was estimated; 30,000 on Thursday; 25,000 on Wednesday; 15,000 to 20,000 on Tuesday, in Madison alone, with additional protests outside Republican lawmakers' homes throughout the state and at least two protests at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire campus and the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh), and 56% of the state being against Gov. It’s no mystery why Scott Walker is so intent on dismantling the Labor Unions in Wisconsin. He has been bought and paid for by the right-wing lunatic fringe billionaire Koch Brothers in order to further their toxic ideology and regressive agenda. “According to Wisconsin campaign finance filings, Walker's gubernatorial campaign received $43,000 from the Koch Industries PAC during the 2010 election. That donation was his campaign's second-highest, behind $43,125 in contributions from housing and realtor groups in Wisconsin. The Koch's PAC also helped Walker via a familiar and much-used politicial maneuver designed to allow donors to skirt campaign finance limits. The PAC gave $1 million to the Republican Governors Association, which in turn spent $65,000 on independent expenditures to support Walker. The RGA also spent a whopping $3.4 million on TV ads and mailers attacking Walker's opponent, Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett. Walker ended up beating Barrett by 5 points. The Koch money, no doubt, helped greatly.

“The Kochs also assisted Walker's current GOP allies in the fight against the public-sector unions. Last year, Republicans took control of the both houses of the Wisconsin state legislature, which has made Walker's assault on these unions possible. And according to data from the Wisconsin Democracy Campaign, the Koch Industries PAC spent $6,500 in support of 16 Wisconsin Republican state legislative candidates, who each won his or her election.

“Walker's plan to eviscerate collective bargaining rights for public employees is right out of the Koch brothers' playbook. Koch-backed groups like Americans for Prosperity, the Cato Institute, the Competitive Enterprise Institute, and the Reason Foundation have long taken a very antagonistic view toward public-sector unions.
